After quitting my job, I decided to take up cake decorating (and blogging). I made a pact to myself that 2009 was going to be a good year and I was going to do everything and anything that made me happy. Come along for the ride!

Sooooooooooooooo Cute!!!!

It has truly been an interesting week.

It was the Advanced Workshop with Colette Peters. We didn't really get a lot of instruction; instead, we were left alone for THREE whole days to work on our cake.

We had the choice of doing an all white wedding cake, a fantasy cake (anything goes), or a trompe l'oeil (visual deception). Decisions Decisions! What shall Savitre do this time?

Check out some of the cakes my classmates did:
On Monday, we had to come up with a sketch design and have it approved by Colette.

This is what I came up with:

My sketch and styrofoam cake before the masterpiece is created.

I know I said that I should focus more on my own work and not worry about what other people were doing, but I guess I must suffer from A.D.D. or something because I just couldn't help myself. I just HAD to know what other people were doing.

At first I thought I had a good idea, but after looking around, I wanted to do what everyone else was doing...the lopsided cakes. Shame on you Savitre, this is why you don't look around! *slaps hand*

Monday night I went home extremely depressed about my cake design. I dreaded having to go back to work on it for TWO more days. *frown* Grrrr...will it ever end?

On Tuesday morning, I had a mini cake therapy session with Colette. She tried to tell me that she liked my cake idea and that it was going to be okay. She said "actually, I think you're the only one that's doing...".

I immediately cut her off and said "exactly!!!! I'm the only one..."

Anyways, I sucked it up and mustered enough energy to make it back for the last two days to work on my cake.

After 24 hrs of working on my masterpiece *sigh of relief*, this is what I conjured up.........

A cake inspired by my kitchen sink.
Okay, so my sink isn't that messy and I don't have a mouse crawling around....but you get the idea.

It actually turned out to be a BIG hit. Everyone was impressed by the spaghetti....which was made by my brand new pasta maker *big smile*. I just had to get one after using it so often in my Nicholas Lodge class. Maybe someday I'll actually learn to make pasta with it instead of just gum paste related items.

Although everyone loved my cake, it didn't get the "WOW" that I was looking for. Yup, you guessed it..."it's sooooooooooooooooo cute". I thought adding the mouse would make it less cute, but it turns out that the mouse is what made the whole concept a "cute" cake. YAY!!! MICKEY MOUSE reigns supreme!!! (even though Ratatouille came to everyone's mind...it's all good because it's all DISNEY!!!!)

Fera and I chuckled everytime we heard someone say that my cake was cute. I swear I would be rich if I got a penny for everytime I heard that today.

Oh well. I was just happy that everyone liked it...if definitely made me feel a lot better about my cake. Much credit must be given to Colette for convincing me that my cake idea was a good one. She kept saying to me "I TOLD YOU everyone would like your cake". Yes, she was right...I should listen to her more often...and why shouldn't I?..afterall, she IS the professional :o)

Thanks Colette, for inspiring me to be original and getting those creative juices to churn again!

So, what did I learn from this experience?
  • Who cares what anyone else does!
  • Being different is COOL!
  • I might be A.D.D.!
  • Wash your dishes more often!!!!! *laughs*

Anyways, today concludes my last and final Wilton class *sniff*
I can't believe I've completed 7 Wilton courses as of January 23rd.
It has been a fun eye-opening experience. Although this chapter has come to an end...a new chapter at Notter awaits. According to my countdown, I have approximately 5 more days to go! YIKES!!!! :o)

Thank you all for your kind words and support throughout this adventure, I hope you join me in my Orlando odyssey! :o)
